Researchers at the US cybersecurity company FireEye have discovered that hackers have begun to probe the defences of banks in the Middle East by targeting bank employees with malware-infected emails to collect information about bank networks and user accounts. FireEye (FEYE) researchers say a series of cyberattacks on Middle Eastern banks isn’t related to an earlier digital heist of Bangladesh Bank that netted $81 million, but didn’t say whether it has ties to similar assults on banks in Ecuador and Vietnam. The identity of the hackers in all three cases is not known. Cyber-security experts say the attackers would have needed to gather knowledge about bank procedures and systems, as well as gain remote access to launch fraudulent transfer requests. FireEye researchers said in a blog post that in early May they had identified “a wave of emails containing malicious attachments being sent to multiple banks in the Middle East.”

New Orleans is sinking, according to a study using NASA airborne radar. The subsidence, or sinking rates, of the city and surrounding areas is caused by naturally occurring geologic and human-caused processes. According to this latest study, subsidence is happening at higher rates than what previous data has shown using different kinds of radar, which before had been lower resolution and not as spatially extensive. Scientists with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Louisiana State University used a special kind of radar to measure the ground levels in 2009 and 2012, and  the amount the ground sank during that time. The Federal Government has insisted that MTN Nigeria pays N50 billion for its violation of Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) cards registration policy. MTN was fined the N1.04 trillion for failing to register a number of subscribers in accordance with laid down rules. The downward review of the fine by 25 per cent as well as payment of N50 billion by the telecommunication company led to an investigation of the issue by the House of Representatives.

About 8,200 cars were recalled last November after problems were identified with the improper repair of the resistor's thermal fuse. The latest recall affecting the Opel Zafira B model was announced this morning. Drivers reported sudden fires from overheating in the blower motor system. In the recall last year, the resistors in all cars were replaced along with any corroded blower motors. Under the second recall, all vehicles will get a new wax fuse resistor, new blower motor and a new molding at the base of the windscreen to prevent water from coming in.

The Nokia name will return to the mobile phone market after a company backed by one of its former executives teamed up with manufacturer Foxconn to buy the rights to the brand for mobile devices. Nokia, once the world's biggest maker of mobile phones, was wrongfooted by the rise of smartphones and eclipsed by Apple and Samsung. It sold its entire handset business to Microsoft Corp in 2014 and now focuses on telecoms network equipment. Google offers a plethora of cloud services that mobile developers can use to power their apps. With Firebase, which it acquired in 2014, it already offered developers a dedicated platform and SDK for building mobile apps; today it is greatly expanding this service by launching a number of new features and integrating the service deeper into the rest of its cloud tools. At its I/O developers conference today, the company announced Firebase Analytics, a free new tool that wll give you a better sense of how people are actually using your apps. Additionally, Firebase is getting new features including cloud messaging, which lets developers push messages to users through their apps; online storage powered by Google Cloud Storage; and the ability to tweak your app on the fly.Google also revealed that over the past year, it has more than doubled the volume of app installs driven by ads. Specifically, the company has delivered over 2 billion app downloads to developers.
